Client: Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula
Construction Cost: $300,000
The Lion’s Head Harbour Committee wanted to expand its marina capacity from 120 to
approximately 250 slips. Riggs Engineering met with the Harbour Committee to establish
parameters for the expansion and developed seven schemes for their consideration. The
recommended scheme was adopted and is currently being implemented.

Riggs Engineering designed a small sheet pile wall extension that was completed in 1999 and a 90 metre long rip-rap revetment along the north shore that was implemented in 2000. The launching ramp was also extended this year to accommodate the low water levels. We carried out a hydrographic survey and prepared a dredging contract to removed 7,400 cubic metres of material and the site work is nearing completion.

Riggs Engineering prepared exhibits and attended a large public consultation meeting where all of the design considerations were presented and environmental concerns were addressed.

This work has proceeded largely because of the vision of the harbour committee and has received only token funding from DFO-Small Craft Harbours Branch. It also reflects the confidence the Harbour Committee has in Riggs Engineering.

The construction of the additional floating docks may proceed this winter with the approval of funding from the municipality.

Brian Riggs is the lead engineer on this project.
